For nearly eight years, Greg Allen and his wife explored the idea of owning a franchise. They had countless conversations with Ross Robertson, their friend and Sidekick consultant, diving into different concepts, stepping back and then revisiting the dream when life circumstances shifted.
Even though the desire to own a business was always there, timing and fear were major hurdles. Greg was well-established in his corporate role, but deep down, he knew he needed more fulfillment.
“I was looking at my future with the other company and just didn’t see much opportunity for advancement,” Greg said. “I was bored with my job. It wasn’t much of a challenge anymore. And I was like, I need something that’s different.”
Our team guided Greg through that uncertainty, helping him weigh risks and opportunities until the timing finally aligned for him to take the leap.
Choosing Cabinet IQ: Simplicity, support and values
Greg thought he knew what he wanted – and what he didn’t.
“I told Ross, ‘Don’t throw any brick-and-mortar concepts at me,’” Greg said. “And of course, he throws this one at me, and I thought, that’s interesting.”
Cabinet IQ checked the boxes Greg didn’t even know he had. The business model was simple, the leadership team authentic and the franchisee community was supportive.
“The support system we have just within the franchisees is unbelievable,” Greg said. “Having that community has been a lifesaver for me, because I ask a lot of questions. They’ve helped me out a ton.”
We helped filter out countless options to match Greg with a brand where he could see himself thriving.
“Ross had told me, ‘You’re going to know when it’s the one,’” Greg said. “And as cheesy as that sounds, it did feel that way.”
The transition: From fear to fulfillment
Owning a business brought challenges Greg didn’t expect – taxes, reporting, operations and balancing sales with administration. But the payoff was worth it. Greg had finally discovered the sense of ownership and fulfillment he was looking for.
“I’ll tell you what, the day I quit was a huge weight lifted,” Greg said. “I don’t regret it one bit. Everything I’m doing is for our company, and that feels a lot better than doing it for the man above me.”
Working for himself also came with the best benefit of all: freedom.
“It’s nice knowing that if I have to go run somewhere for a half hour, it’s really not that big a deal because I can make it up at night or on the weekend,” Greg said. “When you’re doing it for yourself and your family, it’s a lot different.”
Greg’s advice? Stop waiting. Start doing.
Reflecting on his journey, Greg encourages others to do their homework, but not let fear keep them from pursuing their dream of being a business owner.
“It’s not easy, but I wish I had done it 10 years ago. At some point, if you really want to do it, you’ve just got to pull the trigger.”
And that’s exactly what our team helps people do – cut through the noise, discover the right opportunities and build the confidence to move forward.
